Clinic for Torture Victims

The MFP Clinic for Torture Victims

There are 150 countries around the world that actively engage in Government condoned torture. Many of the 50,000 applicants per year seeking asylum in the US are torture survivors, with a backlog of 350,000 cases yet to be decided. Most of our patients have fled the Horn of Africa, but we see individuals from all over the world who have been victimized by Government imprisonment and persecution, gang violence, female genital mutilation, and human trafficking.

The MFP Clinic for Torture Victims at the Grace Medical Center in Baltimore is run by physicians, nurses, interpreters, and befrienders who provide pro bono medical forensic examinations and medical referrals for asylum seekers and affidavits for immigration courts in the greater Washington and Baltimore area. With our service partners: the Intercultural Counseling Coalition and the Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition International (TASSC), we provide a wide range of medical, psychological, and social services for torture victims.

MFP is active in the world-wide movement to prevent torture by educating Government officials, the public, and health professionals about the devastating effects of torture on its victims and on society in general. We authored the groundbreaking report, “Cruelty and Denial: Government Sanctioned Torture in Ethiopia.”

MFP supports the international movement to eliminate female genital mutilation as promoted by STOP FGM/C,  European Network, and Equality Now.
