New Neonatal Unit at Alma Mater Hospital MAKE SURE THE PARAGRAPH BREAKS ARE THERE
The community of Gros Morne is celebrating the opening of the new neonatal unit at the Alma Mater Hospital, a collaboration between Medicine For Peace and the hospital administration. The unit is a major investment by Medicine For Peace to provide high quality emergency medical care to newborns.
The death rate of infants born in rural Haiti is the highest in the Americas and the lack of facilities to care for newborn emergencies is a major cause of Haiti’s high neonatal mortality rate. As has been the case in other resource poor countries, this modern, well-equipped unit will have an immediate impact on the wellbeing of newborns in the whole northern Artibinite region.
The capacity to provide newborn care for the Gros Morne region is consistent with the long-standing mission of Medicine For Peace to care for marginalized women and children with respect and dignity.
